TRAINING THE TRAINERS
(SMOKING CESSATION) COURSE

This 3-day course is aimed at those who have a role in training healthcare workers about smoking cessation. The course will be both practical and experiential. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and practice a range of teaching methods to help their learners explore the knowledge, attitudes and the skills required to be effective in smoking cessation.

Numbers will be limited so that there will be the opportunity to work in small groups and to receive individual feedback from the facilitators. This course will contribute to the personal development plans of participants and the portfolios they may wish to build on as evidence of their own professional development.

Course facilitators: Run by 2 experienced trainers who specialise in smoking cessation. Sue Cook pharmacist and Camilla Peterken health development and training consultant. They both have many years experience of training and education and work with smokers either on a one to one basis, or by providing specialist group sessions. The combination of their experiences of working with clients in the community, hospitals and primary care in conjunction with their experience of training health care workers from different backgrounds bring a unique element to this course.

The main aims of the course are:
To assist trainers to develop skills in facilitating positive learning experiences, to explore and share current learning and training methods and to develop confidence in new teaching and training techniques.

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Design programmes of training on smoking cessation with clear learning objectives
  • Identify and use a range of teaching methods for different participants and group sizes
  • Use a range of experiential techniques
  • Describe core elements of training planning, delivery and evaluation
  • Understand the principles of working with adult learners
  • Create and maintain effective learning environments
  • Monitor Learning
  • Use a range of methods to evaluate learning outcomes

The course will use the Smoking Cessation Training Toolkit as its basis and focus on training for smoking cessation. Training issues within a multi professional context will also be addressed.
