A Trainers Toolkit For Delivering Smoking Cessation Training At All Levels

This toolkit was originally developed on behalf of the NHS Executive, South East and London Regional office by a multidisciplinary team experienced in the field of smoking cessation and professional development.

The Authors include Sue Cook MRPharmS ACIPD, Camilla Peterken RGN, Msc (Health Promotion) Cert Ed, and Sarah Stokes RGN HV DN Cert, RPN.

In 2005 and 2008 we added some new materials and updated some existing sections.

WHAT IS THE TOOLKIT?

• A modular training manual providing detailed trainers notes in a ringbinder with overheads and handouts provided on a disc in Powerpoint and Word. Disc can be photocopied and adapted to suit your local needs.
• The toolkit is linked to the Standard for training in smoking cessation treatments. (HDA 2001)
• Each section can be used as a stand alone section or as part of a course and has clear learning aims and objectives. The training notes provide imaginative ideas on teaching methods with timed inputs, further reading and references.

HOW TO USE THE TOOLKIT

This toolkit is aimed at trainers working with any staff involved in smoking cessation whether it is a student nurse who is asking about smoking status for the first time, to health care workers providing specialist cessation support.

• Identify the service level you want your participants to be able to deliver; identify the required learning outcomes and competencies; pick out the sections you need to use; design your course and use the required sections in the toolkit adding your own local flavour.
